Subaru BRZ Aftermarket Radio Installation Kits - fits Scion FR-S and Toyota 86

The Subaru BRZ shares its dash opening and main radio connectors (10-pin and 6-pin) with the Toyota 86 / Scion FR-S, but the rest of the wiring follows the Subaru playbook - the newer BRZ (2016-2020) uses the same adapter set as other Subarus of its era, plus an extra amplifier turn-on wire that other models do not need. That amp wire is why the BRZ gets its own page. Every 2013-2020 BRZ, FR-S, and 86 uses the same main harness - the USB adapter and the camera/steering-wheel harness depend on your year (steps 2 and 3). The 28-pin adapter in step 3 is optional for cars without a backup camera or steering wheel audio buttons. 2022 and newer BRZ/GR86: the wiring changed completely on the second-generation cars - steps 1-3 do not apply to you, so skip straight to step 4.

Choosing a head unit: any double-DIN unit fits with the right kit below. Popular picks are Pioneer and Sony Apple CarPlay / Android Auto units, ATOTO Android units (the AM/FM adapter is already included with our ATOTO harnesses), and vehicle-specific Android units like iDoing - check what wiring those include; the USB, AM/FM, and 28-pin adapters below are still the plug and play way to keep your factory features.

Buy the whole kit - 2013-2020 BRZ

Rather order it all at once? The complete kit is everything in steps 1, 2, and 3 - main harness, AM/FM antenna adapter, USB retention harness, and the 28-pin backup camera / steering wheel adapter - at 10% off the individual prices. Pick your headunit and your model year and we build it to match your car:

Ordering an ATOTO kit? Those harnesses have the AM/FM antenna adapter built in, so that kit is the harness, the 28-pin adapter, and the USB harness.

Or build it piece by piece below - the steps cover the same parts, and you can leave out anything your car does not need.

1Main harness + AM/FM antenna adapter - every BRZ needs one of these pairs

The main harness connects power, ground, and speakers. The AM/FM antenna adapter is a separate piece you need alongside it - except with our ATOTO harnesses, which already include it. Pick the row that matches your new headunit:

Pioneer headunits watch the parking brake wire and lock out certain screens and settings while the vehicle is moving; the module simulates an engaged parking brake so those stay available. Built in, it saves you sourcing a separate bypass module and splicing it into the harness. Everything else about the two harnesses is identical - if you do not want the bypass, take the standard one.

Installing another brand (Kenwood, Alpine, JVC, etc.)? Use the Metra 70-1761, which you will wire to your headunit's own harness - it needs the AM/FM adapter too:

2022 and newer BRZ (and GR86): none of the harnesses in this step fit your car - the connectors changed on the second-generation BRZ. See step 4 before you order anything.

Amplifier note: the BRZ has a factory amplifier for the front door speakers, switched on through pin 9 of the 10-pin connector - an extra amp turn-on wire that regular Subaru installs do not need. Wiring your own Metra 70-1761? Make sure that wire gets powered, or email us and we will confirm the right hookup for your headunit.

328-pin adapter - backup camera, aux input, and steering wheel buttons

This is the harness that connects the factory 28-pin connector to your new headunit. It retains:

-Backup camera functionality (it provides 6 vdc to power the factory camera and passes the video signal to the new headunit)
-Auxiliary input (***Analog audio input only. USB is not included - that is step 2***)
-Reverse gear signal
-Vehicle speed signal
-E-brake signal
-Steering wheel control signals, on a connector for the iDatalink Maestro SW

Tell us your model year when you order. The 2013-2015 BRZ is wired differently from the 2016-2020 BRZ, and the BRZ did not get steering wheel audio buttons until the 2017 model year - so we build this adapter to match your car. Pick your year on the listing below and we will send the correctly wired part.

If your car has no backup camera, no aux input, and no steering wheel audio buttons, you can skip this adapter - the main harness in step 1 covers the rest.

Using the steering wheel buttons with your new headunit also requires a steering wheel control interface module - email us with your headunit choice and we will confirm the right setup (Maestro SW for the Subaru BRZ).

Scion FR-S and Toyota 86 owners: your main harness, USB, and AM/FM adapters are the same as the BRZ, but the 28-pin camera/steering-wheel adapter is the Toyota version - it is sold here (AHH-7558, $54), and those cars use the Axxess ASWC-1 for the steering wheel buttons.

If your car has the factory navigation unit, the Backup Camera adapter on the navigation-equipped Subaru page applies instead - along with the same main harness, AM/FM, and USB adapters.

42022-2026 BRZ (and Toyota GR86) - complete custom install kit

The radio connectors changed again on the second-generation BRZ, so the 2013-2020 parts in steps 1-3 do NOT fit these vehicles - and there is no extra piece that converts them. Instead, we build a complete custom install kit for these models. We have verified against the factory wiring diagrams that the radio wiring is unchanged from 2022 through 2026, so the same kit covers every year of the second-generation BRZ (there was no 2021 model).

Good news on the climate controls: unlike the tablet-style units in most newer Subaru models, the BRZ's heat and A/C controls are NOT integrated into the radio. The factory wiring diagrams show a separate A/C control panel (the physical dials below the radio) that runs the HVAC system on its own - so replacing the radio does not affect your climate controls. This is one of the few newer Subaru models where a full radio replacement is still practical.

Complete Custom Install Kit - $220

Built to order for your specific headunit. The kit includes:

  • AM/FM radio adapter - retains the factory antenna (these cars need a modified version of our Subaru antenna adapter, included in the kit - do not order the standard one from step 1)
  • Backup camera retention - connects the factory camera to your new headunit
  • Steering wheel button connections - pre-wired to a connector for the Maestro SW interface module. The Maestro SW module is purchased separately HERE - it plugs right in.
  • Audio - speaker, power, and ground connections wired for your new headunit

USB: there is no USB retention adapter for these models. Plan on running the USB cable that comes with your new headunit from the back of the unit instead.

Order it below - the menus ask for your vehicle and your head unit's exact model number so we can build the kit to match your car. If anything about your combination needs a different approach, we will contact you before building:

Prefer to talk it through first? Email us with your head unit model and we will confirm the right setup.

Building your own wiring instead? The 38-pin jumper adapter is the building block for custom work on this platform:

Questions about your specific year or trim? Email us and we will point you to the right parts.
