Subaru Aftermarket Amplifier or Subwoofer Installation Information

This page describes the parts needed to upgrade your OEM Subaru audio system by installing either an aftermarket in-line amplifier or an aftermarket subwoofer amplifier. Both upgrades require splicing speaker wires to connect audio signals to the aftermarket amplifier. The harness kits discussed here will allow you to make this connection without damaging/splicing OEM wires.

These "Jumper harnesses" connect between the back of the OEM headunit and the wiring that goes to the speakers. This will allow splicing of these harnesses rather than cutting or tapping factory wiring.

Subaru Ascent (All Model Years)

The Ascent will require the following jumper harnesses:
- 10-pin - This harness provides connections to the +12V, Ground, Illumination, and Front Speakers
- 6-pin - This harness provides connections to the Rear Speakers

Note about Harman Kardon vehicles: The Harman Kardon amplifier is responsible for some volume control and equalization functions so using this adapter will not work for connecting a subwoofer to the OEM headunit (on Harman Kardon vehicles). You will need to connect to output signals of the OEM amplifier or to the Starlink Telematics Module rather than the headunit (See the information on the Subaru Telematics Jumper listed below). If you don't have the Harman Kardon system, then this will not be an issue.

Subaru Starlink/Telematics System Jumper Adapter

If your Subaru is equipt with the Starlink, then your front speaker signals pass through a Subaru Telematics module that sits below the headunit. Usually this unit is mounted to the same bracket as the headunit. Depending on your installation, it is often best practice to intercept these front speaker signals after they pass through the Subaru Telematics module.

Harman Kardon System: If you have the Harman Kardon system and are adding an amp and subwoofer, you can splice into the front speaker signals here to use as inputs to your subwoofer amplifier. We can't connect to the signals at the headunit because the headunit signals have not been processed by the Harman Kardon amplifier so they are not volume controlled or formatted correctly for your aftermarket amp. This adapter will allow you to connect to the front speaker signals after they go through the Harman Kardon amp. This is sometimes easier than connecting at the output of the Harman Kardon amp (please email us if you are interested in the adapter that is used at the amp).

Adding an Inline Amplifier: If you are adding a higher power amp, you may want to consider connecting this amp after the Starlink system (downstream of the telematics unit). The reason is that some users have experienced problems with or damage to the Telematics module because the speaker signals after the aftermarket amplifier are higher volume than the Telematics module is designed for. This has not been a problem when using lower power equipment such as the Alpine KTA-450 (Powerpack Amplifier). When we connect the amplifier after the Telematics module, this creates a new problem because the Telematics module will recognize that the output impedance (which is the front speakers in the OEM configuration) is incorrect and this will flag an error on the Subaru Starlink system. To solve this issue, we must install load resistors between the output of the Telematics module and the input of the aftermarket amplifier. Here is a diagram for how this will look:

Subaru Telematics Module - DCM jumper adapter

We recommend the AudioControl load resistors sold here.

The Telematics 16-pin jumper adapter is sold here and is available as a short jumper without the front speaker signal wires broken out or as a short jumper with 14" wire leads that can be connected to your Line Output Converter or to an amp that has speaker level inputs.

Adding an Inline Amplifier: If you are adding a higher power amp, you may want to consider connecting this amp after the Starlink system (downstream of the telematics unit). You will need to connect to output signals of the OEM amplifier rather than the headunit.

-Additional breakouts can be added upon request. Note that most OEM headunits do not have an amp trigger signal because it is not needed for most OEM applications. If your car doesn't have an OEM amplifier, we recommend using the +12V switched wire to trigger the amplifier as this will turn the amp on when the ignition is on.

2020 Legacy/Outback without Navigation

The 2020 Legacy/Outback without Navigation will require the following jumper harnesses:
- 10-pin - This harness provides connections to the +12V, Ground, Illumination, and Front Speakers
- 6-pin - This harness provides connections to the Rear Speakers

Note about Harman Kardon vehicles: The Harman Kardon amplifier is responsible for some volume control and equalization functions so using this adapter will not work for connecting a subwoofer to the OEM headunit (on Harman Kardon vehicles). You will need to connect to output signals of the OEM amplifier rather than the headunit.

We recommend the AudioControl load resistors sold here.

The Telematics 16-pin jumper adapter is sold here and is available as a short jumper without the front speaker signal wires broken out or as a short jumper with 14" wire leads that can be connected to your Line Output Converter or to an amp that has speaker level inputs.

30-pin Subaru Harman Kardon Amp jumper - HARMAN KARDON VEHICLES ONLY

This wiring adapter will ONLY WORK FOR SELECT vehicles WITH HARMAN KARDON. If you are adding an amplifier to your Harman Kardon vehicle, it will be necessary to tap into the audio signals at the output of the OEM amplifier. The reason for this is that the OEM Harman Kardon amplifier will perform volume control and equalization functions that will not normally be performed in an aftermarket amplifier. Simply put, you won't be able to control the volume in your vehicle unless both the amp and heaudnit are installed and working in tandem. This jumper allows the customer to tap and splice the speaker signals to add a subwoofer or to amplify the speakers in the car without hurting the factory wiring. If you need subwoofer "breakout" wires, please email us at inquiry@autoharnesshouse.com immediately after you order and let us know which speaker signals you would like us to break out for you. Some customers use the Woofer/Subwoofer signals for this and others will use the front door speakers since these tend to be close to Full-Range audio signals. We are here to help! If you have any questions, please ask!

Subaru 24-pin Harman Kardon amp Turn-on Subaru 24-pin Harman Kardon amp Turn-on - Connector picture

Do not buy this if you do not have a vehicle with Harman Kardon - non-Harman Kardon vehicles don't have this connector! This adapter is for the other connector on the Harman Kardon amp. This adapter has the +12V ignition wire connected to it. The 30-pin adapter above does not have an "Amp Turn-on" or +12V ignition switched wire. The 24-pin adapter has a +12V ignition switched signal connected to it and that wire will be broken out for you. If you need a turn-on signal for the amp, then you can connect to it on this wiring adapter. You don't need to buy this adapter unless you need to connect to the ignition turn-on wire because none of the other signals on this wiring adapter are useful for a subwoofer installation.
